J.K. Rowling sparks controversy by calling transgender Paralympian Valentina Petrillo and Algerian Khelif “cheaters” and defending women’s sports.

British author J.K. Rowling has sparked renewed debate after posting a controversial social media message labeling transgender Italian Paralympic sprinter Valentina Petrillo and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif as “cheaters” in women’s sport. Her comments, published in a series of posts addressed to her millions of followers on X (formerly Twitter), have drawn sharp criticism from LGBTQ+ activists and athletes around the world, as well as praise from those who support her continued defense of sex-based categories in sport.

Rowling’s post came in response to media coverage about Petrillo, a visually impaired athlete who transitioned and has since competed in women’s Paralympic events, and Khelif, who was barred from competing in the women’s boxing final at the 2023 World Championships for “medical reasons” reportedly related to elevated testosterone levels. Rowling directly accused both athletes of undermining the integrity of women’s competition, stating: “Women’s sport is not a free-for-all for men who identify differently. This is not inclusion. It’s cheating.”

The Harry Potter author’s remarks quickly sparked outrage from activist groups and sports figures, many of whom accused her of promoting discrimination and misinformation. LGBTQ+ rights organizations condemned her comments, calling them “dangerous” and “harmful to the trans community,” while others noted that both Petrillo and Khelif had complied with their respective sports organizations’ rules.

Petrillo, who has received equal amounts of criticism and support since her participation in women’s racing, responded calmly in an Italian interview: “I run because I love the sport and I follow the rules. I don’t want to take anything away from anyone. I want to compete fairly, and I do that.” Meanwhile, Khelif has not directly addressed Rowling’s comments, though he previously expressed frustration over her last-minute disqualification in 2023, calling it “a painful moment in my career.”

Rowling’s supporters argue that she defends the rights of biological women in sports and refuses to bow to what they see as institutional pressure to accept policies that could harm female athletes. Feminist organizations aligned with Rowling’s stance praised her for speaking out, stating that the issue is not one of identity, but rather one of justice, safety, and biology.

This isn’t the first time Rowling has spoken out on issues related to sex and gender. Since 2020, she has become one of the most prominent public figures advocating for a clear distinction between biological sex and gender identity, especially regarding policies affecting women and girls. Her stance has made her a polarizing figure, drawing intense criticism from some fans of her work but continued admiration from those who share her concerns.
